Dutch Gardens

Dutch Gardens (the monumental seventeenth century European cemetery garden, burial ground of Dutch East India Company merchants, and premier colonial heritage park of North Surat) in Surat in Gujarat, is one of western India's most extraordinary historic monuments.

Constructed during the 1600s when Surat was Mughal India's principal maritime trade emporium, this protected garden complex preserves grand domed mausoleums built by Dutch, English, and Armenian merchant guilds competing for commercial prestige along the Tapi River.

It's the home of towering octagonal Baroque domes supported by heavy stone pillars, the massive 1691 Van Reede mausoleum echoing Mughal imperial tombs, the elaborate double cupola of Sir George Oxenden, weathered Latin and Dutch heraldic coats of arms, and shady pathways winding under flowering frangipani and neem trees.

It represents a rich union of maritime mercantile competition, Indo European stone craftsmanship, and civic heritage where historic cemetery gardens, The Old Fort bastions on the Tapi River, Sardar Patel Museum galleries, and Dumas beach coastlines unite around Surat.

Located in the Katargam Gate quarter of northern Surat, the historical grounds sit just 4 km northwest of Surat Railway Station (ST), 16 km north of Surat International Airport (STV), and 2 km from Chowk Bazar, easily reached by auto or taxi.

The Van Reede Mausoleum, Oxenden Memorial & Armenian Inscriptions

The most towering structure in the gardens is the tomb of Baron Hendrik Adriaan van Reede tot Drakestein, the prominent Director of the Dutch East India Company who died at sea off the Mumbai coast in 1691.

To demonstrate Dutch supremacy over their English rivals, the VOC company erected an imposing double tiered octagonal dome with a grand colonnade and open viewing gallery overlooking the river.

Directly adjacent stands the two storeyed cupola of Christopher and Sir George Oxenden, featuring delicate Renaissance balustrades, classical pediments, and carved Latin epitaphs.

Truth is, the nearby Armenian section holds rare gravestones carved with traditional cross motifs marking the resting places of wealthy silk and diamond merchants.

The Old Fort: Located barely 2 km south along the Tapi riverfront, this 1540 stone fortress protected Surat from naval raids.

Sardar Patel Museum: Resting 2 km south in Sonifaliya, this 1890 municipal museum displays rare gold zari fabrics, antique sandalwood, and Mughal coins.

Dumas Beach: Sits 22 km southwest along the Arabian Sea, famous for evening sea breezes, black sand dunes, and Surti street snacks.
