Yamunotri Temple is the sacred first shrine of the revered Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit in the Garhwal Himalayas, situated at an elevation of roughly 3,293 meters (10,804 feet) in Yamunotri, Uttarkashi district. Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna (the daughter of Surya and sister of Yama), the temple marks the mythical source of the holy Yamuna River emerging from the high Champasar Glacier at Kalindi Parvat.
Originally constructed in 1839 by Tehri Naresh Maharaja Sudarshan Shah and later restored by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur in the late nineteenth century, the temple houses a revered black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna. Millions of pilgrims touring northern Uttarakhand undertake the 6 km mountain trek from Janki Chatti to worship at Divya Shila, cook rice prasad in the geothermal boiling waters of Surya Kund, and take holy dips in Gauri Kund before receiving sanctum darshan.
Truth is, the ringing of temple bells against the backdrop of snow clad Bandarpoonch cliffs fills every pilgrim with deep devotion. The temple is open daily during the yatra season from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM with free entry for all devotees.
