Kharsali (also known as Khushimath) is an ancient pilgrimage village and the sacred winter seat of Goddess Yamuna, situated at an altitude of roughly 2,675 meters (8,776 feet) directly across the river from Janki Chatti near Yamunotri. Inhabited by the hereditary Uniyal Brahmin pandas who serve as the official priests of Yamunotri Dham, this historic mountain hamlet is the true cultural gateway of the Rawain region.
The village is celebrated for its remarkable multi storied ancient Shani Dev Temple (Someshwar Mandir), built with earthquake resilient traditional Kath Kuni timber and stone craftsmanship without mortar. During winter when Yamunotri Dham is closed, the consecrated idol of Maa Yamuna resides here for six months of daily rituals, while the helipad at Kharsali operates as the premier helicopter transit base for Char Dham pilgrims visiting Uttarakhand.
Truth is, walking past carved ancient wooden balconies with views of snow covered Bandarpoonch peak is an inspiring experience. The temple remains open daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM with free admission for all devotees.
The best months to visit Kharsali are from May to June and September to November for Char Dham yatra, and December to March for winter Yamuna darshan.
