About Divya Shila

Divya Shila (meaning 'Divine Rock of Light') is a sacred reddish brown volcanic rock pillar situated right outside the main temple sanctum of Yamunotri Dham at an altitude of roughly 3,293 meters (10,804 feet). According to ancient Vedic scriptures and temple tradition, this consecrated stone slab is the spiritual threshold that all pilgrims must worship and pay homage to before entering the inner sanctum of Goddess Yamuna.

Divya Shila in Yamunotri, Uttarakhand

Situated adjacent to the boiling hot Surya Kund spring along the rushing Kalindi (Yamuna) torrent, the rock slab is bathed by geothermal waters and decorated with flowers, vermilion (sindoor), and sacred threads by temple pandas. Pilgrims touring western Uttarakhand perform traditional puja here to seek divine purification and invoke blessings from Lord Surya and Yamraj (brother of Yamuna).

Truth is, offering prayers at this steaming ancient rock while snow covered peaks tower above you is deeply awe inspiring. Ritual worship at Divya Shila is conducted daily throughout the yatra season with free access for all devotees.

How to Reach Divya Shila
