Kilkileshwar Mahadev is an ancient Hindu stone temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, consecrated in the 8th century AD by Adi Shankaracharya, situated on the scenic banks of the Alaknanda River across Chauras in Srinagar Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Perched amidst tranquil pine and mango groves roughly 3 kilometers from Srinagar town, this revered shrine is one of the four legendary Shiva Dhams established to protect the historical capital of Garhwal.
According to local folklore, Lord Shiva resided here in a state of supreme joy (Kilkila meaning joyful laughter or divine bliss) during his wanderings through the Himalayas. The temple sanctum houses an ancient self manifested (Swayambhu) Shivling continuously bathed in sacred river waters. Surrounded by lush hillside terraces and mountain streams, the temple complex features a serene yajnashala, an ashram for visiting sadhus, and stone bathing steps leading down towards the Alaknanda.
