Situated at an altitude of 1,940 meters amidst dense deodar, pine, and oak forests in Champawat district, Mayawati Ashram (Advaita Ashrama) is a historic branch of the Ramakrishna Math located 9 kilometers from Lohaghat in Uttarakhand. Founded in March 1899 by Swami Vivekananda's disciples Captain J.H. Sevier and Mrs. Charlotte Sevier alongside Swami Swarupananda, the ashram is dedicated strictly to the practice and dissemination of Advaita Vedanta philosophy.
In accordance with Swami Vivekananda's direct vision, Mayawati maintains a unique tradition where no external religious symbols, temple idols, incense offerings, or ritualistic worship are practiced. Swami Vivekananda himself visited and stayed here for a fortnight in January 1901. His living quarters have been reverently preserved as a memorial meditation chamber.
The ashram runs the publication house for the Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda and the monthly journal Prabuddha Bharata, alongside a charitable rural hospital serving nearby Kumaoni hill villages. The peaceful forest surroundings and snow peak vistas offer an unparalleled sanctuary for quiet introspection and study.
