About Banasur Ka Kila

Perched upon an isolated rocky summit at an elevation of 1,859 meters in Champawat district, Banasur Ka Kila (Banasur Fort) is an ancient hilltop fortress situated 7 kilometers from Lohaghat along the road to Karnaprayag and Champawat in Uttarakhand. Steeped in mythological lore, Hindu scriptures identify this mountain stronghold as the ancient capital (Shonitpur) of the thousand armed demon king Banasur, son of King Bali.

Banasur Ka Kila Lohaghat Champawat

According to the Shrimad Bhagavatam, Lord Krishna fought a fierce battle here to rescue his grandson Aniruddha, severing Banasur's arms with the Sudarshana Chakra after Banasur had imprisoned Aniruddha for falling in love with his daughter Usha. The medieval stone ruins feature defensive ramparts, watchtower bastions, and stone masonry dating back to the medieval Chand dynasty rulers.

The final approach involves a tranquil 1.5 kilometer uphill nature trek through dense pine and rhododendron woods starting from Kidal village. The fortress summit rewards hikers with commanding 360 degree views of the Lohawati river valley and distant snow peaks of the Central Himalayas.
