About Kedarnath Temple

Kedarnath Temple is one of the holiest Hindu shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, resting at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) near the head of the Mandakini River in Uttarakhand. Ranking among the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas and serving as the primary stop of the Chota Char Dham circuit, this ancient stone temple is framed against the sheer glacier cliffs of the majestic Mount Kedarnath and Kedar Dome.

Kedarnath Temple

According to tradition, the temple was originally built by the Pandavas and later restored in the 8th century by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. Massive grey stone slabs interlocking without mortar have allowed the shrine to withstand centuries of heavy avalanches, glacial movements, and extreme Himalayan winters. Millions of devotees undertake the arduous mountain trek each year to offer prayers at the triangular naturally formed rock lingam inside the sanctum.

How to Reach Kedarnath Temple

Kedarnath Temple is reached via road up to Gaurikund, followed by an uphill mountain trek or helicopter flight.

  • By Air / Helicopter: Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is 240 km away. Daily helicopter shuttles fly to Kedarnath helipad from Guptkashi, Phata, and Sersi.
  • By Train: Rishikesh (215 km) and Haridwar (240 km) railway stations connect to all major Indian cities. Regular buses and taxis connect both stations to Sonprayag.
  • By Trek / Road: Reach Gaurikund via NH 107. From Gaurikund base camp, embark on a 16 km mountain trek, or hire ponies, palkis, and basket carriers.

Best Time to Visit Kedarnath Temple

The temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya (late April/early May) and closes on Bhai Dooj (late October/early November).

Seasonal Climate Overview

  • Summer (May to June): Pleasant daytime temperatures between 5°C and 16°C. Peak pilgrimage season with long darshan queues and active helicopter transfers.
  • Monsoon (July to August): Frequent mountain downpours trigger landslides along NH 107. Devotees are advised to track weather advisories closely.
  • Autumn (September to October): Crisp cool air, clear blue skies, and dramatic views of snow peaks. Chilly evenings requiring heavy woolens.
