Kalpavriksha is a colossal and sacred ancient mulberry tree (Morus serrata) standing in Upper Joshimath at an elevation of 1,890 meters in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Estimated by botanists and historians to be over 1,200 years old (and according to tradition, more than 2,500 years old), this monumental evergreen tree has an astounding trunk circumference of over 21.5 meters, making it one of the oldest living trees in India.
According to Hindu spiritual history, Adi Guru Shankaracharya sat beneath the expansive shade of this divine wish fulfilling tree in the 8th century to meditate and attain supreme spiritual enlightenment (Jyoti / divine light), which gave Joshimath (Jyotirmath) its historic name. Directly adjacent to the tree is the sacred Jyoteshwar Mahadev Temple and the natural rock cave (Shankaracharya Guha) where the saint composed his famous commentaries on the Brahma Sutras. Travelers visiting Joshimath tie prayer threads around the ancient bark, seek silent contemplation, and admire the sweeping Himalayan vistas of Hathi Parvat and the Alaknanda valley.
