Jalmagna Shivling

Jalmagna Shivling (meaning 'Submerged Shiva Lingam') is a sacred natural monolithic granite rock formation submerged beneath the churning glacial waters of the sacred Bhagirathi River, located right by the main bathing ghats of Gangotri Dham at an altitude of roughly 3,100 meters (10,170 feet). According to ancient Hindu mythology and the Skanda Purana, this is the exact spot where Lord Shiva sat with open locks (Jata) to receive the torrential cosmic descent of the celestial River Ganga.

During summer and monsoon months, the torrential glacial waters completely engulf the holy rock; however, in early winter (late October to November) when the glacial water level recedes before temple closure, the sacred rock Shiva Lingam emerges clearly visible to pilgrims. Devotees touring northern Uttarakhand gather at the granite riverbank to offer prayers, light floating camphor lamps, and perform holy jalabhishek.

Truth is, viewing the sacred submerged lingam glistening under icy glacial currents against snow peaks is deeply inspiring. The river ghats are accessible 24 hours a day with free public access.
