Deoria Tal (Devariyatal) is an emerald green mountain lake situated at an altitude of 2,438 meters (7,999 feet) above sea level in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Enclosed by dense oak, pine, and blooming scarlet rhododendron forests, this serene alpine water body is globally renowned for its mirror like water surface reflecting the imposing snow clad Chaukhamba mountain massif at a crystal clear 300 degree angle.
Steeped in ancient Hindu mythology, Deoria Tal is revered as the celestial lake where the Hindu gods (Devas) bathed, and as the sacred pool where the famous Yaksha Prashna (philosophical riddle trial) between the Yaksha and the Pandava king Yudhishthira took place in the Mahabharata. An easy and rewarding 2.5 km stone paved trek starts from Sari village, ascending steadily through terraced fields and fragrant forests. Travelers exploring Chopta pitch tents near the forest ridge, photograph early morning golden Chaukhamba reflections, watch high altitude birds, and embark on the scenic connecting forest ridge trek onward to Chopta and Rohini Bugyal.
