About Patal Rudreshwar

Patal Rudreshwar is an ancient subterranean cave shrine discovered in 1993 near Barayan village, roughly 12 km from Champawat. According to regional mythology and the Skanda Purana, Lord Shiva meditated inside this secluded limestone cavern to attain supreme spiritual liberation (moksha), giving the site its sacred prominence.

Patal Rudreshwar in Champawat, Uttarakhand

Inside the 40 meter long limestone cave, natural calcium dripstone formations (stalactites and stalagmites) resemble sacred figures including the goddess, Ganesha, Kamadhenu cow udders, and multiple Shiva Lingams. Pilgrims traveling through eastern Uttarakhand climb down into the illuminated cave chambers for solitary prayer and spiritual reflection.

Truth is, the surrounding pine forests and mountain ridges make the short hike very tranquil. Visiting hours are 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily with free entry for all pilgrims.
