Kranteshwar Mahadev Temple, locally revered as Kandev or Kurmapad Mandir, is a sacred hilltop Shiva shrine perched at an elevation of roughly 2,050 meters atop Kurmachal hill, about 6 km east of Champawat. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu assumed his Kurma Avatar (Tortoise incarnation) on this very hill, giving the entire Kumaon region its ancient name 'Kurmanchal'.
Surrounded by thick forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron, the hilltop sanctum commands striking 360 degree panoramic vistas of the snow capped Greater Himalayas and the winding river valleys below. Pilgrims and nature trekkers touring eastern Uttarakhand climb up the stone trail to seek blessings at the consecrated Shiva lingam.
Truth is, sunrise from the temple summit is pure magic as early rays ignite the snowfields of Trishul and Nanda Devi. Temple darshan is open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM with free admission for all visitors.
