Gabbar Singh Negi Memorial is a historic war memorial erected in honor of Rifleman Gabbar Singh Negi, a legendary Garhwali soldier who was posthumously awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross for supreme battlefield valor during World War I, located right in the main town chowk of Chamba in Uttarakhand.
Serving with the 2nd Battalion, 39th Garhwal Rifles, 21 year old Gabbar Singh displayed extraordinary courage during the fierce Battle of Neuve Chapelle in France on 10 March 1915, leading bayonet assaults through German trenches until he fell in action. Built by the Garhwal Rifles in 1925, the memorial features a statue and commemorative cenotaph. Every year on 21 April, the Garhwal Rifles regiment and local villagers hold the colorful Gabbar Singh Mela with military salutes and cultural tributes.
Truth is, pausing by the cenotaph to read of a young mountain soldier's supreme bravery across European battlefields evokes immense pride. It remains a deeply inspiring patriotic landmark in Uttarakhand's Garhwal hills.
