Gauri Udiyar (meaning 'Gauri Cave' in the local Kumaoni dialect) is a sacred natural cave shrine dedicated to Goddess Parvati (Maa Gauri) and Lord Shiva, situated roughly 8 km from Bageshwar town. Measuring about 20 meters wide and spanning deep into the limestone hill, this cavern houses ancient naturally sculpted stalactite Shiva Lingams and stone rock carvings.
According to local folklore, Goddess Gauri performed intense spiritual penance here to win Lord Shiva as her consort. Devotees and pilgrims journeying across Uttarakhand climb down into the calm cave chambers to light butter lamps, offer fresh bilva leaves, and seek divine matrimonial and spiritual blessings.
Truth is, the tranquil forested slopes surrounding the cave entrance offer an ideal spot for silent contemplation. The cave remains open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM with zero admission fees.
The best months to visit Gauri Udiyar Cave are from October to May when mountain weather is pleasant and trails are dry.
