Bagnath Temple (Vyaghreshwar Mandir) is an ancient stone temple dedicated to Lord Shiva situated right at the sacred confluence of the Sarayu and Gomti rivers in the heart of Bageshwar. Built originally in the seventh century AD and grandly renovated in 1450 AD by King Laxmi Chand of the Chand dynasty, this monumental stone shrine gives the historic town its name 'Bageshwar' (abode of Lord Shiva manifested as a tiger).
According to the Manaskhand of Skanda Purana, Sage Vashistha performed intense meditation here; to enable the sacred Sarayu River to flow further downstream without disturbing the sage, Lord Shiva appeared as a tiger (Vyaghra) and Goddess Parvati as a cow. Hundreds of brass bells and intricately carved stone idols of Surya, Ek Mukhi Shiva, and Mahishasuramardini adorn the temple sanctum. Pilgrims touring Uttarakhand take holy dips at the confluence ghats (Sangam) before offering prayers.
Truth is, evening Aarti beside the sacred Sangam is a deeply moving experience. The temple complex is open daily from 5:30 AM to 8:30 PM with zero admission fees.
