Talakaveri, situated at a cool elevation of 1,276 meters (4,186 feet) on the windswept slopes of the Brahmagiri Hills in Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka, is revered across South India as the sacred birthplace and origin of the holy River Cauvery (Kaveri), affectionately honored as Dakshina Ganga.
Surrounded by rolling evergreen shola forests and undulating misty peaks along the Western Ghats, this ancient pilgrimage sanctuary draws millions of devotees, nature lovers, and trekkers to witness the holy spring where South India's lifeline river begins its 800 kilometer journey to the Bay of Bengal.
It's the home of the sacred perennial spring Kundike where Mother Kaveri emerges from the earth, the holy stepped bathing tank (Kalyani) for ritual purification, ancient stone shrines dedicated to Lord Agastheeshwara and Lord Vinayaka, and the scenic stone staircase leading up to Brahmagiri Peak.
It represents a rich spiritual and geographical landmark where Puranic mythology, sacred river veneration, Kodava cultural traditions, and sweeping mountain panoramas unite in high Coorg.
Located 8 km uphill from the temple town of Bhagamandala and 44 km west of Madikeri, it sits 160 km from Mangalore International Airport and 165 km from Mysore, accessed via scenic winding mountain roads.
According to the Skanda Purana, the great sage Agastya received the celestial river maiden Kaveri in his water vessel (Kamandala) from Lord Brahma to relieve a severe drought affecting southern lands.
While Sage Agastya was deep in meditation atop the Brahmagiri Hills, Lord Ganesha assumed the form of a crow and built on the edge of the Kamandala, gently tipping it over. The sacred waters spilled out, giving birth to River Cauvery and flowing across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Truth is, Sage Agastya subsequently consecrated a Shivalinga here, establishing the Sri Agastheeshwara shrine that pilgrims worship alongside the Ganesha temple today.
The river originates from a small square masonry spring enclosure known as the Kundike. Water constantly bubbles up from subterranean mountain aquifers into an adjoining holy stepped tank (Kalyani) where pilgrims take ritual dips before entering the inner sanctum.
Kaveri Theerthodbhava (Tula Sankramana): Every year in mid October, on the auspicious occasion of Tula Sankramana, thousands of devotees gather around the Kundike. At a predetermined astrological moment, the spring experiences a spontaneous bubbling surge of holy water (Theerthodbhava), celebrating Goddess Kaveri's annual reappearance.
Brahmagiri Summit Trek: A stone paved staircase of approximately 365 steps leads from the temple courtyard directly to the summit of Brahmagiri Peak (1,608 meters). On clear mornings, you can gaze across endless layered blue mountain ridges extending toward the Arabian Sea and Kerala border.
Bhagamandala Confluence: Located 8 km down the hill, Bhagamandala marks the Triveni Sangama where the Cauvery merges with the Kannike and mythical underground Sujyothi rivers, anchored by the ancient Sri Bhagandeshwara Temple.
Combine your pilgrimage to Talakaveri with a stop at Bhagamandala, a tour of coffee and cardamom estates, and evening views at Raja's Seat in Madikeri for an unforgettable Coorg holiday.
Reaching Talakaveri in high Kodagu is straightforward from Madikeri and Mangalore across Karnataka.
