The Legend of the Cosmic Pot (Kumbam) & Creation of Kumbakonam

At the time of the universal deluge (Pralaya), Lord Brahma placed the seeds of all living creation inside a sacred clay pot filled with divine nectar (Amrita) and set it afloat on the rising floodwaters.

Lord Shiva took the form of a hunter, shot an arrow to pierce the floating pot, and the nectar spilled out across this sacred soil; Lord Shiva then molded the wet clay into a conical Shiva Lingam with his own hands, establishing Adi Kumbeswarar and naming the place 'Kumbakonam' (Corner of the Pot).

Truth is, worshipping this clay lingam that was shaped by Lord Shiva's divine hands gives an unshakeable sense of peace.
