Droog Fort

Droog Fort (locally venerated as Bakasura Malai, celebrated across the Nilgiri Hills as one of South India's most rugged, historic, and panoramic mountain trekking destinations, famed for its dramatic location built on a cliff edge at an elevation of 1,800 meters / 6,000 feet overlooking deep river canyons and the Coimbatore plains), situated 15 km southeast of Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, is one of Tamil Nadu's most exhilarating highland fortress ruins.

Constructed originally in the 16th century and later reinforced in the 18th century by the legendary ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan, as a formidable strategic military watchtower and frontier defense outpost during the Anglo Mysore Wars, this historic stone citadel provided an unassailable defensive bastion commanding 360 degree views across enemy movements traversing the mountain passes.

Tipu Sultan's Strategic Military Watchtower

During the late 18th century, Tipu Sultan stationed his elite garrisons atop this precipice to monitor British troop movements ascending from the Coimbatore plains.

Although only a single crumbling stone wall and entrance arch stand today, the strategic commanding vantage point over hundreds of square kilometers remains intact.

Truth is, standing atop the windy fortress wall while looking down into the sheer 2,000 foot abyss below is spine tingling.
