Sinhagad Fort, rising heroically upon an isolated mountain crest 1,312 meters (4,304 feet) above sea level in the Bhuleshwar Sahyadri range 30 km southwest of Pune in Maharashtra, is celebrated as Maharashtra's most storied and revered Maratha mountain fortress.
Originally known as Kondhana with stone fortifications dating back over 2,000 years to sage Kaundinya, this impregnable hilltop bastion earned its legendary name "Sinhagad" (The Lion's Fort) following the epic February 1670 battle where Maratha commander Subedar Tanaji Malusare made the supreme sacrifice to liberate the fort from Mughal garrison rule.
It's the home of the sacred Tanaji Malusare Samadhi memorial shrine, the sheer 300 meter vertical Dona Giri cliff (Tanaji Kada) scaled under cover of darkness, the massive 17th century Kalyan and Pune gateways, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak's historic summit bungalow, and steaming village stalls serving piping hot Pitla Bhakri with fiery thecha and matka dahi.
It represents a rich national monument where heroic Maratha military valor, ancient Sahyadri rock defense, exhilarating mountain trekking, and mouthwatering rural Maharashtrian culinary culture unite above the Pune valley.
Located in Haveli taluka, it sits 30 km from Pune city center, 35 km from Pune Railway Station (PUNE), 42 km from Pune International Airport (PNQ), and 180 km from Mumbai, easily accessible by private car, taxi, city bus, or scenic hiking trail from the foothills of Donje village.
On the night of February 4, 1670, Subedar Tanaji Malusare led a daring band of 300 Mavala soldiers on a covert assault to reclaim Kondhana from Mughal commander Udaybhan Rathod.
Using rope ladders to scale the near vertical Dona Giri cliff at midnight, the Maratha warriors breached the defenses in a ferocious hand to-hand combat where Tanaji bravely fought and fell in victory.
Truth is, upon receiving news of the hard won victory and Tanaji's martyrdom, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj expressed his profound grief with the immortal words: "Gad aala, pan sinh gela" (The fort is won, but the Lion is lost), forever christening the stronghold Sinhagad.
Kalyan Darwaza & Pune Darwaza: Massive twin stone gateways fortified with iron spiked wooden doors, bastions, and guardrooms designed to repel elephant battering rams.
Tanaji Kada & Tanaji Samadhi: The vertical western precipice reveals the staggering heights scaled during the 1670 raid, alongside a peaceful stone memorial shrine where visitors pay homage to the Maratha hero.
Tilak Bungalow: The historic colonial resthouse where freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak spent summers and hosted Mahatma Gandhi in 1915.
Culinary Delights: A visit to Sinhagad is synonymous with authentic rural Maharashtrian food. Local village women prepare steaming hot Pitla (spiced besan curry), fresh Jowar/Bajra Bhakris baked on clay griddles, spicy green chili thecha, crispy kanda bhajji, and thick Matka Dahi (curd served in earthen pots).
Popular Trekking Route: Thousands of fitness enthusiasts and trekkers hike the 2.5 hour stone path starting from Donje village, enjoying cool morning breezes and panoramic views of Khadakwasla Dam lake.
After exploring the glorious battlements of Sinhagad Fort, relax by the lakeside shores of Khadakwasla Dam, visit the grand Maratha palace of Shaniwar Wada in Pune, or discover the tranquil gardens of Osho International Meditation Resort.
Reaching Sinhagad Fort from Pune city center is scenic and straightforward across Pune in Maharashtra.
