Elephanta Caves (the world famous 6th century rock cut Shaivite temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage sanctuary sculpted into the basalt hills of Gharapuri Island 10 kilometers east of Mumbai Harbour) in the coastal capital of Mumbai in Maharashtra, stands as India's supreme ancient rock sculpture masterpiece.
Carved out of solid volcanic rock between the 5th and 8th centuries CE under the Kalachuri and Rashtrakuta dynasties, this island monastic sanctuary preserves the pinnacle of classical Indian rock sculpture.
It's the home of the monumental 20 foot-high three headed Trimurti Sadashiva sculpture, the grand pillared hypostyle hall of Cave 1 with fluted stone columns, eight colossal rock cut Dvarapala gatekeepers, and an intensely peaceful, deeply mystical island sanctuary ambiance filled with the murmuring sea breezes of Mumbai Harbour, rhythmic lapping waves, and the echoes of sacred Vedic Shaivite history.
It represents a rich Maharashtra world heritage rock art apex, ancient Indian sculpture, and island cruise tourism where monumental basalt panels, Gateway of India catamarans, Colaba promenades, and Mumbai travel circuits unite in Elephanta Caves.
Located on Elephanta Island (Gharapuri), it sits 10 km east of Apollo Bunder (accessible by a 50 minute scenic ferry ride from Gateway of India), 13 km from CSMT, and 30 km from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM), making it Mumbai's most celebrated heritage day excursion.
The centerpiece of Cave 1 is the colossal 6 meter (20 foot) Trimurti bust depicting Lord Shiva in three manifestations: Creator (Vamadeva/Uma on the right), Preserver (Tatpurusha in the center), and Destroyer (Aghora/Bhairava on the left).
Surrounding panels showcase supreme rock art including Ardhanarishvara (composite half male half female form), Gangadhara (Shiva catching river Ganga), Nataraja (cosmic dance of creation), and Ravananugraha (Ravana shaking Mount Kailash).
Truth is, standing before the calm central countenance of the 1,400 year-old Trimurti Sadashiva in the cool subterranean shadows will leave you in complete awe of ancient Indian sculptors.
