Pratapgarh Fort

Pratapgad Fort (the formidable 1656 mountain fortress constructed by Moropant Trimbak Pingle under the vision of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj atop the 1,080 meter Dhorpi hill spur) in the Sahyadri mountains near Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra, stands as Maharashtra's supreme Maratha military citadel.

The Battle of Pratapgad & Bhavani Mata Temple

On November 10, 1659, Pratapgad became the site of one of Indian history's most famous encounters, where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj vanquished the formidable Bijapur general Afzal Khan using wagh nakha (tiger claws), establishing Maratha independence.

In the Lower Fort (Parkote), visitors worship at the sacred Bhavani Mata Temple, built by Shivaji Maharaj who installed a black stone idol of the Goddess brought from Nepal, along with the preserved sword of his loyal commander Hambirao Mohite.

Truth is, climbing the 450 stone steps to the Upper Bale Killa and looking down across the misty abyss of the Radtondi Ghat will give you deep respect for the genius of Maratha fortification builders.

Upper Bale Killa, Afzal Buruj & Equestrian Monument

Upper Citadel (Bale Killa): Perched at the summit, the Bale Killa encloses the Mahadev Temple, the royal courtroom, and the grand 17 foot bronze equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj unveiled in 1957.

Afzal Buruj & Double Walls: A formidable outer bastion guarding the lower gateway where Afzal Khan's final resting place is located, surrounded by 4,000 meters of double tiered loopholed stone ramparts.
