High in the Dongkya range stands Nathu La, one of the most famous mountain crossings in the eastern Himalaya. It crowns the border between Gangtok district of Sikkim and China's Tibet, standing at roughly 4,310 metres above sea level. For centuries it figured on the old Silk Road that carried tea, wool and silk between China and India.
The 1962 war slammed the gate shut, and for decades the pass stayed closed. Then in 2006 India and China struck a deal to reopen cross border trade, restarting a link that had been silent for over forty years. Today the narrow asphalt threads over the mountainside to a controlled border post, a working gateway rather than an open hop.
Visiting Nathu La is not a stroll up a mountain. The pass sits on a sensitive border, run by the Indian army and BSF, so every visitor needs permits issued in Sikkim and visits stay tightly limited. The road from Gangtok winds through narrow switchbacks and takes hours at altitude, so most trips run as a long day trip out of Gangtok's taxi circuit.
Travelers with low tolerance for thin air should think twice before booking the ride. Carry warm clothes and keep steps slow. In many ways the trip up to the pass is the show itself, with the valley dropping away toward India and prayer flags snapping over the ridgeline.
Nathu La is always reached as part of an organised trip from Gangtok, since the border area needs permits.
High altitude weather decides everything at Nathu La.
