Van Vihar National Park (the protected 4.45 square-kilometer lakeside wildlife haven established in 1979 on the southern shores of Upper Lake, celebrated for its unique open safari drive where free roaming blackbucks and spotted deer graze alongside open moated tiger and leopard enclosures) in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, stands as central India's supreme urban national park and ecotourism landmark.

The Open Herbivore Safari, Tiger Moats & Bird Wetland

Herbivores such as chital, wild boar, and blackbucks roam without cages across the park's deciduous woodlands, frequently approaching visitors riding along the tranquil road.

Carnivores including Asiatic lions, white tigers, and sloth bears reside in expansive enclosures surrounded by natural rock moats, while wetland birds like painted storks congregate on lake islets.

Truth is, pedaling a bicycle down the shaded 5 kilometer waterfront road in the early morning while spotting spotted deer grazing near the lake is one of the most delightful experiences in Bhopal.

Van Vihar & Eco Safari Day Plan

The Wildlife Safari & Lakeside Nature Circuit: Morning start with hot poha jalebi and chai near Shymala Hills (7:00 AM) -> enter Van Vihar National Park through Gate 1 (7:30 AM to 10:30 AM: rent a bicycle or board an electric golf cart, cycle the 5 km lakefront track, view free ranging blackbucks, spot tigers in open moats & watch migratory waterfowl along the lake edge) -> exit through Gate 2 and walk up to the National Museum of Mankind (11:00 AM to 1:30 PM: explore authentic life size tribal houses) -> authentic lunch at a lakeside garden restaurant (1:45 PM to 2:45 PM) -> enjoy afternoon motorboating at Upper Lake (3:15 PM to 5:00 PM) -> drive to VIP Road for sunset views (5:30 PM to 6:30 PM) -> dinner in central Bhopal (7:30 PM to 9:30 PM).

Visiting Code & Conduct: Speed limit inside the park is strictly capped at 20 km/h; horn honking, feeding animals, or littering plastic is heavily penalized; rental bicycles and battery powered golf carts are available at both Gate 1 (Rampur) and Gate 2 (Bhadbhada); the park is closed every Friday.
