Bhimbetka Rock Shelters (the UNESCO World Heritage prehistoric archaeological sanctuary spanning over 750 sandstone rock shelters across the Vindhyan hills, renowned for 30,000 year-old Paleolithic and Mesolithic cave art, the celebrated Zoo Rock, and Auditorium Cave) near Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, stands as India's supreme prehistoric art gallery and Stone Age human dwelling landmark.

Auditorium Cave, Zoo Rock & Stone Age Paintings

Accidentally identified in 1957 by legendary Indian archaeologist Dr. V. S. Wakankar while traveling on a passenger train, Bhimbetka contains one of humanity's oldest and dense concentrations of rock art.

Prehistoric hunter gatherers created the lasting paintings using natural mineral colors including red hematite ochre, white kaolin, manganese oxide, and leaf extracts mixed with water and tree resins.

Auditorium Cave features massive 25 meter-high rock halls flanked by natural sandstone pillars and ancient petroglyphic cupules that date back more than 100,000 years to early hominid occupation.
