On the higher ground between Gulmarg and Alpather lake stands a quiet Sufi shrine that locals hold in deep respect. The Baba Reshi ziarat honours Baba Reshi, born Payam ud Din in 1411 CE near Ganderbal, a 15th century Kashmiri Sufi saint famous across the valley for his ascetic life.
The settlement itself carries the saint's name, sitting around 13 km from Gulmarg proper in Baramulla district. Wooden and stone structures in the complex, faded prayer flags and the surrounding meadows give it a calm, off the usual tourist beaten path feel.
People come here to pay respects, tie cloth and sit a while in the quiet, especially on Fridays and during Urs celebrations. The shrine draws both Kashmiri devotees and travellers heading toward Alpather, blending pilgrimage with a scenic mountain drive through the evergreen woods.
Honest note though. Most Gulmarg visitors skip this stop because time gets eaten by the gondola and the meadows. If you're comfortable with a looser itinerary, the detour rewards with genuine local atmosphere rather than hordes. Pair it with the Kashmir high ground views for a half day.
The shrine sits in the village of Baba Reshi on the road toward Alpather from Gulmarg.
Kashmir's seasons shape how the shrine feels.
