Thangalpara

Thangalpara (universally celebrated as Thangal Para or Thangal Rock), dramatically situated atop a massive rocky mountain crest just 5 km from the town center of Vagamon in Kerala, is one of Central Kerala's most revered Sufi spiritual pilgrimage sites and fascinating geological landmarks.

Perched at a cool mountain elevation of 1,050 meters above sea level, this sacred hill is venerated as the final resting place (Dargah / Mazar) of Hazrat Sheikh Fariduddin, an 8th century Afghan Sufi saint who lived, prayed, and meditated on these windy heights centuries ago.

It's the home of an enormous spherical granite boulder balanced precariously on the edge of a rocky cliff face, an ancient natural cave passage with a perennial freshwater spring, the grand annual Uroos festival where sacred Ganjusakkar offerings are shared among all communities, a scenic uphill rock trek offering cool breezes and misty clouds, and sweeping 360 degree panoramic viewpoints overlooking the deep Kokkayar river valley.

It represents a rich spiritual and cultural sanctuary where medieval Islamic Sufi mysticism, legendary geological folklore, interfaith communal harmony, and spectacular Western Ghats mountain vistas unite in the high ranges.

Located just 5 km from Vagamon town along the Kurisumala Ashram Thangalpara route, it sits 38 km from Pala, 68 km from Kottayam Railway Station (KTYM), and 98 km from Cochin International Airport (COK), easily accessible by hired jeep, auto rickshaw, or private vehicle to the base followed by an easy rock walk.

The Colossal Spherical Rock & Saint Fariduddin Lore

According to local folklore, the giant spherical boulder crowning the hill was originally a small stone used by the Sufi saint Sheikh Fariduddin to grind betel leaves; after his demise, the stone grew miraculously into this immense monolithic orb.

Beside the sacred tomb lies a natural narrow rock cave where the saint sought solitude for intense prayer; inside this cave flows a small perennial freshwater spring that has never run dry even during severe droughts.

Truth is, pilgrims of all religious faiths, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians, visit the Dargah side by-side to seek blessings, light incense, and pray for peace and prosperity.

The Annual Uroos Festival & Ganjusakkar Offering

The Grand Uroos: Celebrated annually during the Malayalam month of Dhanu, the Uroos festival attracts thousands of devotees who climb the rocky slopes to pay homage at the saint's mausoleum.

Sacred Ganjusakkar: A traditional sweet offering made of powdered sugar, roasted rice flour, and grated coconut (known as Ganjusakkar) is ceremonially prepared and distributed to all visiting pilgrims as holy prasad.

The Interfaith Harmony Triad: Thangalpara forms the Muslim pillar of Vagamon's sacred three hills, completing the spiritual circuit alongside Murugan Mala (Hindu) and Kurisumala Ashram (Christian).
