Thikkoti Light House

Thikkoti Light House (celebrated across Malabar as the historic Thikkodi Lighthouse and the maritime guide tower guarding the treacherous Velliyamkallu sacrificial rocks), perched upon a scenic coastal promontory in Thikkodi village just 36 km north of Kozhikode city in Kerala, is one of Kerala's most scenic, historic, and ecologically rich coastal navigation landmarks.

Constructed in 1909 amidst the rocky remnants of an infamous 1847 British maritime shipwreck that claimed numerous lives off the hazardous reef of Velliyamkallu (Sacrifice Rock), this 33 meter-tall cylindrical masonry lighthouse was engineered to guide international merchant ships, Arab dhows, and local fishing vessels safely around the jagged offshore granite shoals into Calicut and Vadakara trading harbours.

It's the home of the towering red and-white navigation tower offering panoramic 360 degree views across the crashing Arabian Sea surf, the famous Thikkodi drive in beach (a firm natural golden sandspit extending towards the Kadalur point where vehicles can cruise smoothly beside the rolling tide), pristine migratory bird foraging mudflats sheltering thousands of wintering sandpipers, terns, and plovers, scenic coconut palm groves framing rocky tide pools, and striking evening sunset vistas over the offshore Velliyamkallu rocks.

It represents a rich coastal and navigation sanctuary where colonial maritime history, safe drive in beach recreation, rich migratory shorebird ecology, and timeless Malabar coastal charm unite in Koyilandy taluk.

Located along the coastal highway off NH 66 in Thikkodi village, it sits just 2 km from Thikkodi Railway Station (TKT), 9 km from Koyilandy Railway Station (QLD), 36 km from Kozhikode, and 62 km from Calicut International Airport (CCJ / Karipur), easily accessible by coastal trains, auto rickshaws, and private vehicles.

The 1909 Lighthouse & The Velliyamkallu Shipwreck

Erected on the site of an 1847 shipwreck, the lighthouse replaced primitive shore fires to guide shipping traffic away from the deadly submerged granite reefs of Velliyamkallu.

Known as Sacrifice Rock, Velliyamkallu was also the historic maritime execution grounds where the legendary Kunjali Marakkars fought naval battles against Portuguese armadas.

Truth is, climbing the lighthouse stairs or standing on the rocky headland as the massive Fresnel lens beams sweep across the dark ocean is unforgettable.
