Matri Dei Cathedral

The 1513 AD Zamorin Treaty & 1724 Baroque Rebuilding

On December 24, 1513, the Zamorin of Calicut concluded a formal peace treaty with Portuguese governor Afonso de Albuquerque, granting land and timber to build this sanctuary.

In 1724, Italian Jesuit architect Father Joseph managed the comprehensive reconstruction, creating the majestic double colonnaded Baroque facade that survives today.
