About Marine Drive

Fort St. George, rising along the historic coastal waterfront of Rajaji Salai in Chennai in Tamil Nadu, stands as the very first English fortress built in India, founded on St. George's Day in 1644 by the British East India Company.

As the nucleus around which the historic colonial city of Madras developed, this formidable moated sea fortress served for centuries as the supreme administrative headquarters of the Madras Presidency, influencing the political and military evolution of South India.

It's the home of St. Mary's Church, recognized as the oldest surviving British building in India and the oldest Anglican church east of Suez, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Fort Museum housing over 3,600 colonial artifacts and weapons, Wellesley House, and a historic 150 foot teak flagstaff overlooking the Bay of Bengal.

It represents a rich architectural bridge between 17th century European military fortification and modern governance, today housing the official Secretariat and Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu.

Located on the northern stretch of Kamarajar Promenade, it sits just 1.5 km east of Chennai Central Railway Station (MAS) and 20 km north of Chennai International Airport, easily accessible by suburban train, metro, and city buses.

Founding of Madras & Colonial History

In 1639, British East India Company factors Francis Day and Andrew Cogan negotiated a grant of coastal sandy land from the Nayaka ruler Damarla Chennappa Nayakudu.

By 1644, they completed the inner citadel, naming it Fort St. George. The fortress quickly expanded with bastions, moats, and stone curtain walls to repel fierce attacks during the Carnatic Wars and the siege by French forces under Count de Lally in 1758.

Truth is, legendary figures of colonial history spent formative years within these granite walls, including Robert Clive, who served here as a young company clerk, and Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington.

Consecrated on 28 October 1680, St. Mary's Church is famous for its 4 foot-thick bomb proof curved masonry roof, engineered to withstand heavy cannonade from enemy battleships.

The sanctuary houses original silver communion plates gifted by Elihu Yale (the Governor of Madras whose endowment founded Yale University), Robert Clive's 1753 marriage certificate, and exquisite marble funerary monuments carved by British master sculptors John Flaxman and Thomas Banks.
