St Francis Church

St. Francis CSI Church (celebrated across the world as the oldest European church built in India and the original burial place of legendary Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama), situated in the historic heart of Fort Kochi just 12 km from Cochin city center in Kerala, is one of the nation's most iconic, architecturally pioneering, and globally revered colonial monuments.

Originally constructed in 1503 CE by Portuguese Franciscan friars under the patronage of Admiral Pedro Álvares Cabral and Afonso de Albuquerque with permission from the Raja of Cochin, this monumental timber and laterite stone sanctuary was initially dedicated to Santo António, witnessing five turbulent centuries of European colonial history as it transitioned successively from Catholic Portuguese rule to Protestant Dutch Reformed control in 1663, Anglican British governance in 1795, and finally into the Church of South India (CSI) today.

It's the home of the historic burial vault where Vasco da Gama (who died in Cochin on Christmas Eve in 1524 during his third voyage as Viceroy of Portuguese India) was initially interred for fourteen years before his mortal remains were ceremoniously moved to the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon in 1538, authentic hand operated ceiling punkhas (cloth fans pulled by ropes from the outer veranda), centuries old engraved Dutch and Portuguese tombstone slabs mounted along the sanctuary walls, an imposing gabled facade with arched bell belfries, original 16th century baptismal and marriage registry books, manicured grassy grounds shaded by old flowering trees, and a peaceful spiritual atmosphere where sea breezes drift gently through tall arched timber windows.

1503 Construction & 500 Years of European History

Erected in 1503, St. Francis Church became the very first brick and-mortar Christian sanctuary built by Europeans on the subcontinent.

Unlike Portuguese churches destroyed by the Dutch in 1663, St. Francis was spared and converted into the primary Dutch Reformed Church.
