Sudh Mahadev Temple is an ancient and revered Hindu pilgrimage shrine situated in Chanhani (Chenani) tehsil of Udhampur district, roughly forty two kilometers from Patnitop. Perched at an elevation of 1,225 meters along the banks of the sacred Devak stream, this historic Shiva temple is believed to have been constructed thousands of years ago, housing ancient stone sculptures and sacred Shaivite relics linked with the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

The centerpiece of the temple complex is a broken iron trident (trishul) divided into three distinct pieces embedded in the stone courtyard. According to ancient mythological lore, Lord Shiva hurled his trident to protect Goddess Parvati while she was meditating at nearby Mantalai, inadvertently striking a demon named Sudheet who was born a Shiva devotee. Upon realizing his mistake, Shiva gave the demon liberation and decreed that the shrine would bear his name, Sudh Mahadev.
Inside the sanctum sanctorum, a black marble Shiva Lingam and life sized idols of Lord Shiva and Parvati mounted on Nandi the bull are worshipped by thousands of devotees. A natural subterranean spring known as Pap Nashni Bowli flows directly into a stone tank inside the complex, where pilgrims take a sacred bath to wash away worldly sins before performing prayers. Pilgrims frequently combine their spiritual visit with sightseeing across Patnitop and the adjoining wedding altar of Mantalai.
Every year during the full moon of Ashadha (June or July), the temple hosts the grand three day Sudh Mahadev Mela. Tens of thousands of pilgrims from across Jammu, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh assemble to offer prayers, sing devotional Dogri bhajans, and participate in vibrant rural handicraft fairs organized on the temple grounds.
Sudh Mahadev Temple is open daily to pilgrims from 5:00 AM to 8:30 PM. Morning aarti is performed at 6:30 AM and evening aarti takes place at 7:00 PM. Entry is free for everyone. Devotees are expected to take off shoes at the main courtyard gate and observe peaceful decorum inside the holy sanctum.

Legend says Lord Shiva hurled his trident to protect Goddess Parvati while she meditated, inadvertently striking a demon devotee named Sudheet. Shiva granted him liberation and named the holy place Sudh Mahadev in his honor.

Sudh Mahadev Temple is located roughly 42 km from Patnitop and about 35 km from Kud via Chenani, taking around 1.5 hours by road.
The three day Sudh Mahadev Mela takes place during Ashadha Purnima (June/July), drawing thousands of pilgrims who take a holy dip in the sacred spring and participate in Dogri folk music and fairs.
The temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 8:30 PM. Entry is completely free for all devotees and visitors.
