Nag Temple

Nag Temple (also revered as the Cobra Temple or Naag Mandir) is a six hundred year old sacred wooden shrine located in the tranquil Karlah village on the outskirts of Patnitop in Udhampur district. Perched amidst dense groves of ancient deodar and cedar trees, this historic shrine is dedicated to Nag Devta, the serpent deity revered across Jammu for granting protection, prosperity, and blessings of rain and good harvest.

The temple is built predominantly from seasoned deodar wood and local stone, showcasing traditional hill pagoda architecture that has withstood centuries of heavy snowfall and seismic movements. Inside the sanctum sanctorum sits a sacred black stone image of King Cobra decorated with silver ornaments and floral garlands. Devotees offer milk, flowers, and traditional sweet delicacies to seek the deity's blessings.

According to local folklore, this sacred shrine is linked with the divine wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati at nearby Mantalai, where Nag Devta served as an auspicious witness. Nag Panchami Celebrations & Local Dogri Traditions

During the annual festival of Nag Panchami in the monsoon month of Shravan, thousands of devotees from neighboring mountain villages gather at the temple. Special traditional havan ceremonies, Dogri devotional music, and community langars are held throughout the day, creating a colorful festive atmosphere amidst the deodar trees.

Visiting Hours, Dress Code & Forest Walk Tips

Nag Temple is open daily to pilgrims from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM with free entry for all visitors. The gentle 2 km walk from Patnitop circular road takes roughly 25 minutes through pine paths. Visitors should dress respectfully covering shoulders and knees, and remove footwear at the wooden entry steps before entering the sanctum.
