Tucked away in the remote southwestern reaches of the Ladakh union territory at an average elevation exceeding 12,000 feet (3,650 meters), Zanskar Valley in Leh Ladakh is one of the most untouched and culturally preserved high altitude valleys on Earth. Enclosed by towering glaciated peaks of the Great Himalayan and Zanskar ranges in Jammu And Kashmir, this rugged wilderness has preserved ancient Tibetan Buddhist customs, isolated cave monasteries, and dramatic river canyons for millennia.
Truth is, traveling through Zanskar feels like entering a forgotten kingdom. The valley is centered around Padum (the administrative hub), where the Doda (Stod) and Lungnak (Tsarap) rivers converge to form the mighty Zanskar River. The landscape features deep gorges, colossal hanging glaciers, and whitewashed villages surrounded by golden barley terraces.
Among the legendary sights of the valley is the jaw dropping Phugtal Monastery (Phuktal Gompa), built like a natural honeycomb around a massive cliff cave in the Lungnak gorge during the 12th century. Accessible only by foot trek along sheer river canyon ledges, Phugtal represents the pinnacle of monastic isolation. Exploring Zanskar connects smoothly with journeys through Kargil and road trips from Manali over Shinku La pass.
Approaching Zanskar from Kargil via Suru Valley takes you across Pensi La Pass (14,435 ft), known as the Gateway to Zanskar. Right below the pass summit lies the massive Drang Drung Glacier, a winding river of fractured blue ice that is the second largest glacier in Ladakh after Siachen.
The valley floor is dotted with historic gompas including Karsha Monastery (the largest monastery in Zanskar overlooking Padum plains), Stongdey Gompa built on a rocky bluff, Sani Monastery with its ancient 2nd century Kanika Chorten, and Bardan Gompa. Exploring these gompas offers rare insights into Gelugpa and Drukpa monastic traditions before returning toward Hall of Fame.
During harsh winter months when heavy snowfall isolates Zanskar roads, the turbulent Zanskar River freezes over into a solid sheet of ice known as the Chadar. For centuries, local Zanskari villagers walked this frozen river corridor over multiple days to trade in Leh.
Today, the Chadar Trek has achieved worldwide fame as one of the ultimate winter wilderness expeditions. Adventurers trek on ice sheets across sub zero canyon temperatures (-25°C to, 35°C), passing frozen turquoise waterfalls and sleeping in natural cave shelters beneath towering granite walls.
Travel to Zanskar has been revolutionized by the construction of the all weather road connecting Padum to Darcha and Manali in Himachal Pradesh across Shinku La Pass (16,580 ft). This modern route allows travelers to reach Zanskar directly from Manali without crossing Kargil.
Padum provides basic tourist guest houses, eco campsites, local dhabas, and fuel pumps. An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required. Plan a minimum of 3 to 4 days to tour the valley comfortably before heading toward Nubra Valley.
