Pangong Lake

Stretching across a colossal length of 134 kilometers across the Changthang plateau at an altitude of 14,270 feet (4,350 meters), Pangong Lake (known natively as Pangong Tso or the High Grassland Lake) in Leh Ladakh is the world highest transboundary saltwater lake. Approximately one third of this legendary water body lies within the borders of Jammu And Kashmir, with the remaining two thirds extending east into the Tibetan Autonomous Region.

Truth is, no photograph or movie scene can truly capture the first glimpse of Pangong azure blue waters emerging dramatically through the narrow granite pass beyond Tangste. The endorheic lake is world famous for its striking color shifting waters, which transition through striking shades of aquamarine, deep indigo, turquoise, and pale green as sunlight angles shift across the surrounding barren peaks.

Despite containing hyper saline water completely devoid of fish or micro marine life, the lake shores support flourishing populations of migratory birds including Bar headed Geese and Brahmini ducks. The iconic shooting location of Bollywood film 3 Idiots at Spangmik village has made this shoreline an essential milestone on every Himalayan expedition. Crossing Chang La Pass and the Wildlife of Changthang

Driving to Pangong from Leh requires crossing Chang La Pass (17,590 ft), the third highest motorable mountain pass in the world. Maintained by the Indian Army, Chang La features a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Changla Baba, where soldiers distribute complimentary hot tea to acclimatizing travelers.

Descending toward the lake through Durbuk and Tangste, the road passes expansive rocky screes where cute Himalayan Marmots pop out from subterranean burrows to feed on wild grass. Herds of grazing Pashmina yaks and wild kiangs can be spotted across the broad valley floor before arriving at the shoreline.

Lakeside Villages: Spangmik, Man, and Merak

While Spangmik is the main hub for tourist dining and photography props, traveling further east along the unpaved coastal trail brings you to the tranquil villages of Man and Merak. These border hamlets offer authentic Changpa stone homestays, solar powered eco cottages, and zero light pollution.

Stargazing along the shores of Pangong Lake is an otherworldly experience. At night, the crystal clear high altitude atmosphere reveals the glowing arc of the Milky Way galaxy stretching from horizon to horizon, reflecting off the glassy lake surface before traveling toward Hall of Fame.

Permits, Camp Stays, and Altitude Guidelines

An official Ladakh Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for both domestic and foreign visitors. Night stays are arranged in luxury Swiss glamping tents, wooden geodesic domes, and cozy village homestays located strictly outside the designated environmental buffer zone.
