Shey Monastery

Perched dramatically on a rugged rocky spur overlooking the Indus River valley roughly 15 km south of Leh, the historic Shey Monastery (Shey Gompa) and Palace complex is one of the most venerable royal sanctuaries in Leh Ladakh. Serving as the ancient summer capital of the Namgyal dynasty kings in Jammu And Kashmir, this centuries old citadel was founded in 1655 by King Deldan Namgyal in loving memory of his late father, King Singge Namgyal.

Truth is, approaching Shey along the highway with thousands of white chortens (stupas) dotting the valley plains feels like stepping directly into classical Tibetan history. The main draw inside the upper monastery is the colossal 39 foot (12 meter) tall seated copper statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, heavily gilded with five kilograms of pure gold leaf.

Constructed across three vertical stories of the monastery, the statue upper level allows pilgrims to gaze directly into the serene gilded face of Lord Buddha, painted with lapis lazuli eyes and illuminated by fluttering butter lamps. Frescoes depicting the 16 Arhats (disciples) and Buddhist mandalas adorn the surrounding walls. Visiting Shey pairs naturally with trips to Leh Palace and sunset prayers at Shanti Stupa.

Royal Palace Architecture and Sacred Chortens

The adjoining Shey Palace, constructed from sun dried mud bricks, timber beams, and local granite stones, reflects traditional Ladakhi fortified architecture. Though the royal residence now stands largely in scenic ruins, the outer parapets offer commanding views across the lush green fields of Shey and Thiksey.

Scattered around the base of the hillock lies the largest chorten field in Ladakh, containing hundreds of whitewashed stupas dating from the 10th to the 17th centuries. Ancient stone rock carvings etched on roadside boulders depict the Five Dhyani Buddhas, showing that Shey was a spiritual crossroads long before the Namgyal dynasty built the palace before traveling to Hall of Fame.

Shey Doo Lhoo and Shey Rupla Festivals

Shey Monastery hosts two prominent annual monastic festivals: Shey Doo Lhoo in July (marking the beginning of the agricultural sowing season) and Shey Rupla during harvest time. Monks perform sacred cham masked dances wearing colorful brocade silk robes and fierce protective deity masks.

During these celebrations, the oracle monks from nearby gompas enter trances to offer prophetic blessings to local farming families. The rhythmic chanting of Buddhist sutras accompanied by giant copper horns (dungchen) creates an electrifying cultural ambiance.

Visiting Hours, Entry Fee, and Practical Tips

Shey Monastery is open daily from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 1:30 PM to 6:30 PM. Entry tickets cost approximately 30 rupees per person, collected at the monastery entrance stairs.

The site is easily reached via the Leh, Manali Highway (NH 3) by local bus, taxi, or rented two wheeler. Plan for about 45 to 60 minutes to climb the stone stairs, view the giant Buddha statue, and take in the panoramic Indus valley views before heading toward Magnetic Hill or Khardung La.
