Kalatop Wildlife Reserve, also known as Kalatop Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary, is an expansive 30.69 sq km high altitude forest reserve situated at 8,000 feet (2,440 metres), located 8 km from Dalhousie. Carpeted in dense deodar, blue pine, and rhododendron trees in Himachal Pradesh, it is a great place for nature and wildlife lovers.
The sanctuary is home to Himalayan black bears, barking deer (kakar), leopards, serow, jackals, and langurs. Birdwatchers eagerly explore the forested canopy with binoculars to spot vibrant Himalayan monals, koklass pheasants, Eurasian jay, and black headed jays flitting between pine branches.
Truth is, the unpaved 3 km walking track from Lakkad Mandi check post to the historic colonial Kalatop Forest Rest House offers one of the most rejuvenating forest strolls in the Himalayas. Sunlight filters gently through towering conifers while wild brooks murmur along the earthen path.
