Dainkund Peak, famously celebrated as the Singing Hill, is the highest elevated mountain peak in the region at an altitude of 9,040 feet (2,755 metres), situated 12 km from Dalhousie. Commanding 360 degree views of the Ravi, Beas, and Chenab river valleys in Himachal Pradesh, it is a grand trekking destination.
The mountain gets its moniker Singing Hill from the unique musical humming resonance created when high altitude mountain winds blow through the dense needles of deodar and oak trees. At the summit ridge stands the colorful Pholani Devi Temple, dedicated to a trident wielding local protector deity.
Truth is, the ridge walk from the Indian Air Force base parking lot to the temple is an easy 1.5 km scenic stroll lined with wild Himalayan daisies. Hikers gaze in wonder at the jagged snow mantled peaks of the Pir Panjal range stretching into the horizon.
