Tomb of Khwaja Khizr in Sonipat (celebrated across India as an exceptional masterwork of late Lodi dynasty architecture and an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected national monument of outstanding historical significance, built between 1522 and 1524 AD during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Lodi, world famous for its richly carved red sandstone and kankar masonry, monumental arched gateway, and striking semi circular dome set amidst landscaped heritage gardens), located in Jatwara mohalla in Sonipat in Haryana, stands as Sonipat's most celebrated medieval architectural treasure.

Commissioned by Langar Khan, the son of Zahir Ghazi, in honor of the revered local saint and statesman Khwaja Khizr (the son of Darya Khan who served with distinction during the reign of Sultan Sikandar Lodi), this 500 year-old mausoleum represents one of the few surviving monumental tombs constructed in red sandstone and grey quartzite immediately prior to the First Battle of Panipat (1526 AD) and the dawn of the Mughal Empire.

It's the home of the elevated square plinth accessible via a grand flight of sandstone steps flanked by protective stone balustrades, the monumental two storied arched entrance gateway (Darwaza) featuring decorative red and-yellow stone bands and floral medallions, the square burial chamber crowned by an imposing hemispherical dome resting on an octagonal drum with ornamental corner kiosks (Chhatris), the intricately carved red sandstone jali screens allowing soft sunlight into the central tomb chamber, the ancient Persian and Arabic epigraphs carved in Naskh script commemorating Sultan Ibrahim Lodi and Khwaja Khizr, and an intensely peaceful, contemplative heritage atmosphere where centuries old neem trees shade the tranquil ASI garden lawns.

Located in Jatwara Mohalla in Old Sonipat, it sits just 2 km northeast of Sonipat Railway Station, 45 km north of New Delhi, 12 km south of Murthal, and 65 km from Delhi International Airport (DEL), easily accessible by auto rickshaw, e rickshaw, or private car.

1522 AD Lodi Architecture & Red Sandstone Facade

Constructed two years before the fall of the Delhi Sultanate, the tomb reflects the pinnacle of Lodi architectural design with its balanced proportions, multi colored stone inlays, and arched niches.

The central dome is constructed using interlocking stone masonry and coated with fine lime plaster that has weathered five centuries with remarkable resilience.

Truth is, standing beneath the towering red sandstone gateway as morning light illuminates the intricate calligraphy on the archways is deeply inspiring.
