Cactus Garden

Cactus Garden (the National Cactus and Succulent Botanical Garden, premier desert flora research center, and Asia's largest outdoor landscaped succulent sanctuary) in Panchkula in Haryana, is one of the subcontinent's most extraordinary botanical conservation complexes.

Established in 1987 under the visionary leadership of Dr. J.S. Sarkaria, this sprawling 7 acre horticultural park was created specifically to protect endangered succulent species from worldwide extinction.

It's the home of towering North American saguaros reaching toward the sun, massive golden barrel cacti resting on landscaped earthen mounds, glasshouses sheltering rare Mexican succulents, shaded stone pathways winding between flowering aloes, and tranquil water lily pools reflecting sculptural desert greenery.

Located centrally in Sector 5 of Panchkula opposite the City Centre, it sits 5 km from Chandigarh Railway Station (CDG), 12 km from Shaheed Bhagat Singh Airport, and 3 km from the Kalka Highway, easily reached by local auto or city taxi.

Rare Desert Species, Dr. Sarkaria Heritage & Glasshouse Pavilions

The garden preserves over 2,500 distinct species of cacti and succulents originating from arid regions across Mexico, Arizona, Madagascar, South America, and Africa.

Notable living specimens include massive Echinocactus (Golden Barrel), ancient columnar Pachycereus, rare varieties of Opuntia, and extensive collections of medicinal Aloes and Euphorbias.

Three specialized climate controlled glasshouses protect delicate cold sensitive succulents from northern Indian winter frosts and heavy monsoon downpours.
