About Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple

Kochareekkal Caves sit in the quiet village belt of Pampakuda, Ernakulam district, a short drive from Muvattupuzha. Most people come for the famous Areekkal Waterfalls next door and stumble onto these caves without planning it. Honestly, that is the best way to find them.

The whole cluster sits on the Piramadam Vettimudu route, roughly 16 km from Muvattupuzha town and about 35 km from Ernakulam city. Rubber plantations and forest patches wrap around the hills here, so even the drive feels like part of the trip.

Areekkal Waterfalls Three Tier Cascade near Kochareekkal Caves

What Makes This Spot Special

Truth is, the caves themselves are modest rock shelters rather than deep caverns. Locals have known them for generations. Kids scramble over the rocks, families spread lunch under the trees, and nobody charges you a rupee for any of it.

The real headliner is the water. Areekkal Falls drops in three tiers over dark granite, feeding off streams that rise in the Mannathur Hills of Tirumaradi Panchayat. The total fall crosses 70 feet, with the longest single drop touching nearly 100 feet after heavy rain.

Mind you, this place stayed unknown outside the neighborhood until 2014. That year the Kerala government launched the Areekkal tourism development project, added safety railings, steps, a small park, and a barricaded bathing pool below the third tier. Word spread fast after that.

The Waterfall and the Caves Together

Look, treat this as one half day outing rather than two separate stops. The falls and caves share the same laterite hill country. You can hear water from the cave side during monsoon months.

The bathing area below the third level is barricaded, which matters more than you'd think. Western Ghats streams rise without warning. Stick inside the ropes, especially if you've got children along.

No surprise there. The water turns brown and violent in peak monsoon, then runs glass clear by December. Photographers prefer the post monsoon window when the rocks stay wet and the jungle looks freshly washed.

Things To Do Around the Caves

Bathe at the barricaded pool. The safest swim spot sits right below the third tier. Depth stays manageable from June to February and locals watch the zone on weekends.

Climb Mandalam Mount. A short hike from the same road gives you a wide view over the Pampakuda lowlands. Go early. The rock heats up fast by eleven.

Visit Mayeeladam Para. Another rock formation nearby that locals use as a sunset point. Nothing commercial here, just views and wind.

Walk to Shoolam waterfall. A thinner seasonal cascade a few kilometers away. Worth it only when the monsoon has been generous.

Explore Pazhur heritage. Pazhur Padipura, the grand gateway of the old Pazhur palace grounds, and Pazhur Perumthrikovil Temple sit within easy driving distance. History buffs should not skip them.

Muvattupuzha river at Pazhoor near the cave belt

A Little History

This pocket of Ernakulam carries old trade memories. The Muvattupuzha river route at Pazhoor once moved goods between the high ranges and Kochi's backwaters. Boatmen, spice traders, and temple builders all passed through.

Piravom, 10 odd kilometers away, adds its own layer. The Piravom Valiya Palli, an ancient Syrian Christian church, draws pilgrims year round. Its festival in January fills the whole belt with visitors.

The caves never got royal chronicles or battles. Their story is simpler. Shelter for travelers, a cool rest stop for farm laborers, and a picnic hideout for generations of school kids. Sometimes that is history enough.

Food and Local Life

Small teashops line the Piramadam road. Order kappa and fish curry if you see it written on a slate. Trust me on this one. Add a glass of black tea with lemon grass and you have the full village experience.

Rubber and pineapple farming dominate the landscape. You'll watch sheets being tapped and colle
