Laxmi Vilas Palace

Laxmi Vilas Palace (the colossal 1890 royal Gaekwad residence, four times the scale of Buckingham Palace, and premier Indo Saracenic heritage landmark of western India) in Vadodara in Gujarat, is one of the world's largest and most opulent private royal palaces.

Commissioned in 1878 by the visionary Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III and designed by architects Major Charles Mant and Robert Fellows Chisholm, this monumental 500 acre royal complex took twelve years to complete and remains the private home of the Gaekwad dynasty.

The adjoining Royal Armory displays one of South Asia's most valuable collections of historical weaponry, including swords wielded by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and legendary Maratha warriors.

Truth is, the building incorporated elevators, telephone lines, and central plumbing in 1890, making it decades ahead of European palaces of that era.
