About Kirti Mandir

Kirti Mandir (the monumental 1936 royal cenotaph, Temple of Fame of the Gaekwad dynasty, and premier heritage memorial of Baroda) in Vadodara in Gujarat, is one of western India's most extraordinary dynastic monuments.

Commissioned by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III to mark the Diamond Jubilee of his progressive reign in 1936, this stone memorial was built to honor his royal ancestors and immortalize the contributions of the Gaekwad family to education and civic welfare.

It's the home of an E shaped red sandstone layout symbolizing the sun and moon, a central 33 meter shikhara crowned with a bronze globe showing the map of undivided India, world renowned frescoes painted by master artist Nandalal Bose, carved marble memorial busts, and peaceful corridors overlooking the Vishwamitri River.

It represents a rich union of Maratha royal traditions, Hindu stone carving, and modern Indian fine arts where royal memorials, Laxmi Vilas Palace halls, Tambekar Wada wall frescoes, and Sayaji Baug gardens unite around Vadodara.

Located on Kirti Mandir Road near the Vishwamitri riverbank, the complex sits just 1.5 km south of Vadodara Junction Railway Station (BRC), 6 km from Vadodara Airport (BDQ), and 1 km from Sursagar Lake, easily reached on foot or by auto.

Diamond Jubilee Legacy, Nandalal Bose Masterpieces & Royal Cenotaphs

Maharaja Sayajirao III envisioned Kirti Mandir as a family mausoleum, but as an inspirational cultural landmark celebrating Indian artistic talent.

He invited Nandalal Bose, the pioneer of modern Indian art from Santiniketan, to decorate the interior walls with dramatic frescoes portraying Gangavataran, episodes from the Mahabharata, and the Life of Meera Bai.

The central sanctum preserves marble busts and bronze statues of Damajirao I, Pilajirao Gaekwad, and subsequent rulers who shaped Baroda into a forward thinking princely state.

Truth is, the towering central dome features sun, moon, and earth motifs carved with astronomical precision to indicate the eternal fame of the dynasty.
