Mehtab Bagh, poetically known as the "Moonlight Garden," rests along the northern bank of the Yamuna River directly opposite the world renowned Taj Mahal in Agra in Uttar Pradesh, standing as one of the Mughal Empire's most exquisite riverfront garden sanctuaries.
Originally laid out around 1530 AD by Emperor Babur and subsequently restored and aligned by Emperor Shah Jahan as the ultimate eleventh riverfront garden in the Taj complex, this 25 acre symmetrical Charbagh provides the most iconic, unobstructed, and tranquil sunset vista of the ivory white marble mausoleum across the gentle river waters.
It's the home of an excavated 25 fountain octagonal reflecting pool (Havz), fragrant white flowering jasmine and night blooming lotus plants designed to reflect moonbeams, shaded walkways framed by pomegranate and citrus orchards, and the historic archaeological site debunking the legendary "Black Taj" myth.
It represents a rich architectural retreat where classical Persian Charbagh landscaping, imperial Mughal hydraulic engineering, peaceful riverbank strolls, and world class monument photography unite in western Uttar Pradesh.
Located across the Yamuna River along Dharmapuri Road in Nagla Devjit, it sits 9 km northeast of Agra Fort, 10 km from Agra Cantt Railway Station (AGC), and 14 km from Agra Airport (AGR), easily reached by auto, taxi, or electric shuttle.
First established by Babur as an imperial river pleasure garden, Mehtab Bagh was later purchased and redesigned by Shah Jahan to protect the Taj Mahal from sandblown winds from the riverbed.
For centuries, historians debated the 17th century account by French jewel merchant Jean Baptiste Tavernier, who claimed Shah Jahan intended to construct an identical black marble mausoleum on this exact spot for his own burial, joined to the white Taj by an ornate silver bridge.
Truth is, extensive excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 1994 unearthed not black marble foundations, but a grand octagonal water tank with 25 fountains, red sandstone pavilions, and ancient botanical water channels that were purposely aligned to mirror the white Taj Mahal under the full moon.
While millions of tourists crowd the Taj Mahal forecourt, Mehtab Bagh offers an unhurried, calm viewing experience directly across the flowing Yamuna.
As the evening sun sets behind the Mughal domes between 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM, the white Makrana marble of the Taj transitions through ethereal shades of golden amber, warm peach, and dusty rose, casting perfect mirror reflections upon the tranquil water surface.
The Four Part Garden: Built in the classical Islamic quadrilateral Charbagh layout representing the four gardens of Paradise, the grounds are divided into four equal quadrants by paved red sandstone walkways and water channels.
Fragrant Night Flora: ASI botanists restored the garden with plant species mentioned in historical Mughal texts, including night blooming jasmine (Raat ki Rani), white lilies, hibiscus, neem trees, and sweet lime groves that perfume the evening air.
Combine your sunset trip to Mehtab Bagh with morning exploration of the Taj Mahal, the grand halls of Agra Fort, the delicate marble inlay of Itimad ud-Daulah (Baby Taj), and the imperial deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri.
Reaching Mehtab Bagh across the Yamuna River is easy from all parts of Agra across Agra in Uttar Pradesh.
