Dashashwamedh Ghat, resting centrally along the sacred crescent curve of the Holy River Ganga in Varanasi (Kashi/Benares), Uttar Pradesh, is the principal, most bustling, and spiritually revered riverbank in the world's oldest living city.
According to ancient Hindu Puranas, this sacred ghat was created by Lord Brahma to welcome Lord Shiva to Kashi, where Brahma performed the historic Dasa Ashwamedha Yajna (sacrifice of ten horses), before being rebuilt with grand stone steps in 1774 by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore.
It's the home of the world famous evening Maha Ganga Aarti with soaring multi tiered brass oil lamps, early morning hand rowed wooden boat rides under golden sunrise skies, thousands of floating floral earthen diyas drifting downriver, and direct access to the holy Kashi Vishwanath Dham Corridor.
It represents a rich spiritual and cultural epicenter where Vedic chanting, sacred Ganga snan rituals, colorful silk umbrellas of traditional pandas (priests), and profound spiritual energy unite on the sacred waters.
Located just 500 meters from bustling Godowlia Chowk in central Varanasi, it sits 4 km southeast of Varanasi Junction Railway Station (BSB) and 26 km from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS), easily reached by e rickshaw, auto, or walking.
The name Dashashwamedh originates from Sanskrit ("Dasa" meaning ten, "Ashwa" meaning horse, and "Medha" meaning sacrifice).
Hindu mythology recounts that Lord Brahma performed this elaborate Vedic sacrifice here to sanctify the riverbank upon Lord Shiva's arrival, bestowing equal spiritual merit as performing ten horse sacrifices upon every pilgrim who bathes in these holy waters.
Truth is, the Maratha ruler Queen Ahilyabai Holkar recognized the sacred prominence of this riverbank in 1774, commissioning the massive pink Chunar sandstone ghat steps and surrounding river shrines that endure today.
Every evening at dusk, Dashashwamedh Ghat becomes the stage for the world renowned Maha Ganga Aarti, conducted by young Vedic priests draped in saffron and silk dhotis.
Standing on elevated wooden platforms under ornate floral canopies, the priests synchronize their movements to the resonant sound of blowing conch shells (Shankhanaad), clanging brass bells, rhythmic Vedic chants, and billowing clouds of frankincense.
They hoist massive multi tiered brass lamps holding dozens of burning wicks, rotating them in geometric devotion to Mother Ganga while hundreds of wooden boats cluster on the water filled with spellbound pilgrims.
Subah e-Banaras Morning Cruise: Boarding a traditional wooden rowboat at Dashashwamedh at 5:30 AM allows you to glide past 84 historic ghats as the morning sun casts a golden glow across ancient palatial havelis, witnessing sadhus performing Surya Namaskar and pilgrims chanting mantras in the water.
Floating Diyas: After evening prayers, pilgrims purchase little leaf cups containing marigold blossoms and burning wick lamps, gently releasing them into the Ganga to float alongside thousands of glowing offerings downriver.
After attending the evening Aarti at Dashashwamedh, walk through the lively alleys of Vishwanath Gali to enter the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga Temple, taste famous Banarasi Paan and creamy Blue Lassi, and explore the tranquil monastic ruins of Sarnath.
Reaching Dashashwamedh Ghat in central Varanasi is easy from all city transport hubs across Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
