Omkareshwar Temple stands gracefully in the mountain town of Ukhimath at an elevation of 1,311 meters (4,300 feet) in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. This historic shrine is the sacred winter seat for Lord Kedarnath and Lord Madhyamaheshwar, whose ceremonial idols (Utsav Murtis) are brought here in a grand procession when high altitude snows close the main temples in late autumn.
Historically, Ukhimath was named Ushavritt after Usha, daughter of Banasura, whose mythological wedding with Aniruddha (grandson of Lord Krishna) took place here. The temple compound houses sanctums dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Usha, Aniruddha, and Lord Mandhata. Visitors exploring Ukhimath can attend traditional Rawal priest rituals and take in panoramic views of Mount Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, and the Mandakini valley.
Omkareshwar Temple is centrally located in Ukhimath along the Kund Chopta Gopeshwar roadway.
