Sharda Ghat

Stretching gracefully along the broad right bank of the sacred Sharda (Mahakali) River as it emerges from the Himalayan foothills onto the northern plains in Champawat district, Sharda Ghat (Maa Sharda Ghat) is the spiritual and cultural promenade of Tanakpur in Uttarakhand. Situated within walking distance of the central town market, these broad paved stone ghats serve as the holy ritual gateway for pilgrims travelling across Kumaon and neighboring Nepal.

Devotees from across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Nepal assemble along the tiered bathing steps to perform ceremonial morning dips, ancestral tarpana rituals, and mundan (first hair cutting) ceremonies. The river waters, freshly flowing from the glacial heights of the Greater Himalayas, are believed to possess potent purifying properties.

Every evening at dusk, priests conduct a grand choreographed Maha Aarti ceremony reminiscent of Haridwar's Har Ki Pauri. The rhythmic chanting of Vedic hymns, blowing of sacred conch shells, and floating of hundreds of glowing leaf diyas down the shimmering river create an unforgettable spiritual atmosphere against the backdrop of the Sharda Barrage.
