Located in a peaceful riverbank quarter just 1 kilometer from the town center of Tanakpur in Champawat district, the Panchmukhi Mahadev (Panchmukhi Shiva Mandir) is a revered ancient pilgrimage shrine in Uttarakhand. Dedicated to Lord Shiva in his supreme five faced cosmic manifestation (Panchamukha), the temple marks the sacred gateway where pilgrims taking holy dips in the Sharda (Kali) River begin their spiritual darshan.
The sanctum sanctorum encloses a rare five faced stone Shiva Lingam, with each sculpted face representing the five divine cosmic aspects of Lord Shiva: Sadyojata, Vamadeva, Aghora, Tatpurusha, and Ishana. The temple hall is decorated with carved stone motifs, brass tridents, and marble idols of Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha.
