Kartik Swami Temple is a spectacular hilltop sanctuary built on a narrow ridge of the Kronch Parvat at an altitude of 3,050 meters (10,000 feet) in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Dedicated to Lord Kartikeya (elder son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati), this is the only major temple dedicated to Kartikeya in Uttarakhand, commanding a striking 360 degree panoramic view of the snow capped Greater Himalayas.
According to ancient legend, when Lord Shiva challenged his sons to circle the universe first, Ganesha circled his parents while Kartikeya circled the earth. Upon realizing Ganesha won, Kartikeya sacrificed his bones and flesh in devotion to his father, and his bones are worshipped in the sanctum. The scenic 3 km stone paved ridge trek from Kanakchauri village takes hikers through blooming rhododendron forests. Devotees visiting Rudraprayag tie brass bells at the temple, filling the mountain ridge with hundreds of chiming bells.
