Perched upon a sacred pine and oak crested summit at an altitude of 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) in Almora district, Dunagiri Temple (Maa Dunagiri Devi Mandir) is one of the most venerated Shakti Peethas in Uttarakhand. Situated 14 kilometers from the historic temple town of Dwarahat and 45 kilometers from Ranikhet, this ancient shrine is dedicated to Goddess Vaishnavi (Maa Durga) atop the mystical Dronagiri mountain range.
According to the Ramayana epic, when Lord Hanuman was carrying the Sanjeevani herb mountain from the Himalayas to Lanka to heal Lakshmana, a sacred piece of the Dronagiri hill broke off and fell here, blessing the slope with rare medicinal Ayurvedic herbs. The sanctum sanctorum houses a natural rock formation (Pindi) worshipped as the divine Mother.
Pilgrims ascend approximately 500 stone stairs shaded by whispering deodar and oak trees. The temple complex is also historically connected to Mahavatar Babaji and Lahiri Mahasaya, who revived Kriya Yoga near the surrounding mountain caves.

Dunagiri Temple is situated on a high mountain summit at an elevation of 2,438 meters, approximately 14 kilometers from Dwarahat in Almora district.

Pilgrims climb approximately 500 paved stone stairs through a scenic deodar and oak forest, taking roughly 25 to 35 minutes.
The nearby caves of Dunagiri mountain are revered as the holy site where the immortal master Mahavatar Babaji initiated Lahiri Mahasaya into Kriya Yoga in 1861.
The temple remains open daily from 5:00 AM to 7:30 PM for public darshan and aarti. Entry is free for all visitors.
